BIODEGRADABLE PLANTAPENER TAPE

A Smarter Way to Support Plants!

Strong when you need them, Designed to biodegrade when their useful

life is over

Our biodegradable plant tape combines the proven performance of polyethylene with an advanced biodegradable additive technology. This specialised formulation is engineered to accelerate the natural biodegradation of polyolefin plastics once they reach the end of their service life, offering a significantly improved environmental profile compared to conventional plastic ties.

Independently Tested & Compliant

We believe environmental claims must be transparent, verifiable, and rooted in science. Our claims are formulated in strict accordance with ISO 14021
(International Standards for Environmental Labels and Declarations).

The additive technology has been rigorously evaluated across distinct biological environments using separate, dedicated international protocols:

Anaerobic Biodegradation (Oxygen-Depleted Environments)

Documented testing evaluates performance in high-solids, anaerobic conditions:

  • ISO 15985 (Ultimate anaerobic biodegradability under high-solids anaerobic-digestion conditions)

  • ASTM D5511 (Anaerobic biodegradation under high-solids anaerobic-digestion conditions)

  • ASTM D5526-12 (Anaerobic biodegradation under accelerated landfill conditions)

Aerobic Biodegradation (Oxygen-Rich Environments)

Documented testing evaluates performance in oxygen-rich soil and compost conditions:

  • ASTM D5338 (Determining aerobic biodegradation of plastic materials under controlled composting conditions)

  • ISO 17088 (Specifications for compostable plastics)

Please Note: These plant tapes are engineered for natural biological environments and landfills. They are not intended for industrial composting facilities and are not marketed as EN 13432 certified.

Why Choose Our Biodegradable Plant Tape?

  • Commercial-Grade Performance: Provides the exact strength, flexibility, and UV stability required during normal horticultural operations.

  • Scientifically Verified: Supported by recognised international test methods, proving the material completely breaks down rather than just fragmenting.

  • Responsible End-of-Life: Designed to reduce the long-term accumulation of plastic waste in agricultural and horticultural environments.

How the Technology Works

Conventional polyethylene is exceptionally durable because its long carbon-based molecular chains resist microbial breakdown. Our additive technology addresses this by making the polymer accessible to naturally occurring microorganisms once exposed to a biologically active environment.

Stable During Use

The biodegradable additive is seamlessly incorporated during manufacture. The formulation remains completely stable throughout its intended service life, ensuring the tie holds its grip and supports your plant without premature degradation.

Initiating the Process

Once the plant tie is discarded or buried in a biologically active environment (such as soil or a landfill), naturally occurring micro-organisms begin to colonise the surface of the material.

Progressive Polymer Breakdown

The additive promotes the progressive breakdown of the long polyethylene chains into smaller, low-molecular-weight structures. This structural change is crucial because true biodegradation requires more than just making the plastic brittle or causing it to fragment.

Complete Biological Utilisation

Micro-organisms naturally ingest and utilise these smaller carbon compounds as a food source.

  • Under aerobic conditions (in the presence of oxygen), the ultimate byproducts are carbon dioxide, water, and biomass.

  • Under anaerobic conditions (oxygen-depleted environments like landfills), the natural process yields methane and biomass.

Biodegradation vs. Simple Fragmentation

There is a vital legal and environmental distinction between degradation and biodegradation:

  • Physical Fragmentation: Many "degradable" plastics simply break apart into invisible microplastics that persist in the soil indefinitely.

  • True Biodegradation: Our technology is explicitly designed to facilitate the complete chemical breakdown and biological assimilation of the plastic by microbes, preventing the accumulation of persistent microplastics.

Performance in the Field

Because biodegradation relies entirely on living microorganisms, the exact rate and extent of the breakdown will naturally vary based on where the product is placed. Factors that influence the timeline include:

  • Soil moisture and ambient temperature
  • Microbial activity levels and soil health
  • Oxygen availability and exposure to sunlight
  • Product thickness and crop geometry

Regardless of the specific environment, choosing these tapes ensures that you are actively reducing the long-term plastic footprint of your horticultural operations.

Strength when you need it, Biodegradation when you no longer do!
